Level 1 Intensive

Yoga Teacher Training Course

The Level 1 Intensive Teacher Training Course is held at Ashram Yoga’s Ohui Retreat in New Zealand over the duration of one month. In addition to learning how to become a competent and confident yoga teacher, you will also experience the benefits of living within an ashram lifestyle. 

We begin with beginners' yoga and over the duration of the course, progressively build to intermediate practices. This course is taught systematically, which creates a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding as well as providing a supporting framework for teaching yoga once you graduate.


At the end of the course, you will be qualified for the Yoga Alliance's RYT-200 certification and will have the skills to teach beginner to intermediate yoga postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation (nidra vidya) and meditation (dhyana).

Course Content

The course covers a full spectrum of yoga practices from absolute beginners to intermediate level, including:

  • Asanas: Yoga postures – moving, holding and corrective for the various bodily systems, e.g. digestive, hormonal, reproductive, etc.

  • Pranayama: Yogic breathing techniques to both energise and balance the body.

  • Mudra: Yogic hand gestures that direct internal energy.

  • Mantra: Sanskrit words, sounds and phrases that, when chanted, help to focus the mind and create a meditative state.

  • Nidra Vidya: Systematic yogic relaxation to release stress and emotional tension.

  • Dhyana: Introductory meditation practices that will increase awareness and calm the mind.

  • Shatkarmas: Techniques to purify and cleanse the body.

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Structure and function of the main physiological systems. The anatomy of knees, hips, shoulder girdle and alignment for safety in yoga classes.

  • Yoga Therapy: Elementary therapeutic yoga for back problems, migraines, breathing needs, etc. Application of yoga to harmonise the body, energy, mind and emotions.

  • Teaching Skills: Teaching methodology, class structure, lesson planning and practical experience.

  • Ayurveda: Introduction to Ayurveda – the sister science to yoga.

  • Philosophy: Introduction to yoga philosophy and ancient wisdom.

All course material is presented in workbooks for you to keep and make notes in. Extra text books are beneficial but not compulsory and are available for purchase through Ashram Yoga. This courses includes homework assignments that we will mark and give you feedback on, but there are no pass/fail exams.

Course Structure

Workshops and classes are held every day starting early each morning and continuing in the afternoon. We also run an evening programme including philosophy and kirtan (chanting to music). There are a few periods of timeout during the day for karma yoga (the yoga of selfless action).

Our sessions are usually 2 – 3 hours long and include both group and personal work. We conduct them in our covered outdoor classroom and also inside the main building and at other locations such as the adjacent beach.

Written assignments and practical teaching practice will be assessed by the course instructors.
