Why consider enrolling in a yoga teacher training course?

Being able to share yoga with others is VERY rewarding (we know because we have spent decades doing so!). However a yoga teacher training is more than just learning to teach yoga to others - it is also a very personal evolution in your own practice and understanding of yoga. In learning through yoga, we are fundamentally deepening our understanding of Self and of others.
Many people join our teacher training courses for a myriad of reasons - personal growth, to share your love of yoga with family and friends, developing an understanding of your yoga practice, a change of career path or additional income. Whatever your motivation or inclination you are most welcome! Yoga is, at its core, a personal practice – it is from this experiential perspective that we help to facilitate your growth and understanding.

Why train with Ashram Yoga?
Yoga is so much more than just a system of physical development. Our approach is holistic and encompasses the deeper and more subtle aspects of yoga. Whilst bringing focus to and utilising the physical body, our system also specifically works with the breath, prana (life force energy) and the mind in order to help bring about and support a balanced state of well-being, vitality and a deeper connection with your inner self.
Our training modules allow you to learn an in-depth, integrated and progressive system of Yoga ranging from beginner to advanced levels. You will enjoy a practical and experience-orientated training to help you become a confident and capable teacher and to develop a strong basis for ongoing personal practice, learning and development. You will benefit from a uniquely effective teaching system and style of presentation which originates from an authentic tradition of Yoga combined with the several decades of personal practice and knowledge from the instructors.
Ashram Yoga traces back to the early 80’s when Swami Shantimurti Saraswati was sent to New Zealand to teach yoga by his guru Swami Satyananda Saraswati. Shantimurti established the first Satyananda Yoga Ashram in New Zealand which over time was refined into Ashram Yoga.
Since those inception days we have created a practical and experiential learning syllabus that has been fine-tuned over many, many years of teacher trainings. All of our courses have been developed in response to the enthusiasm of our students wanting to learn, practice, live, teach and integrate authentic yoga.
We follow a traditional yogic lineage and path. Bringing emphasis and importance to some of the lesser exposed aspects of Yoga - pranayama, mudra, bandhas, chanting, cleansing practices, meditation, energetic aspects of being and philosophy. Our senior instructors carve a clear path of developmental learning that starts with the most fundamental practices and progressively builds to intermediate and advanced levels. Our approach to teaching is unique and has earned us a reputation within New Zealand and abroad for quality content and producing highly competent teachers.
"If you want to learn a subject, then teach it."
Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 – Beginner to Intermediate Level 1is designed to create an understanding of the impacts and effects of yogic tools and techniques enabling you to become a competent and confident teacher. These are the fundamental building blocks to understanding yoga for yourself and for sharing it with others. These skills empower you to confidently teach yoga from a beginner to an intermediate standard. Course completion qualifies you for Yoga Alliance's RYT-200 certification.
Yoga Teacher Training Level 2 – Intermediate to Advanced Level 2 moves into the more refined aspects of yoga, such as understanding energy, developing consciousness, the exploration of more advanced yoga postures and breathing practices. Our introduction to the technique of Yoga Nidra (Yoga Nidra Level 1 Teacher Training Course) is also encompassed within this training. Now that we have the building blocks established, we are able to learn how to create and stack them in a combination of ways to offer variance of feel and effect within our practice and classes. For many students this is a revolution in their knowledge and appreciation of yoga.
Yoga Teacher Training Level 3 – Advanced Level 3 is truly next level learning. Comprised of advanced yoga postures and pranayama practices as well as perspectives on how to present postures from a more progressive perspective. We introduce Mudras, bandhas and meditation practices that are rarely taught in Western yoga as well as a more developed Yoga Nidra technique and application. Our Level 3 training has a specific focus on Yoga as a therapeutic practice for a wide range of conditions, lifestyle betterment or as a remedial treatment. This course qualifies you for Yoga Alliance's RYT-500 qualification.
Yoga Nidra Teacher Training (guided relaxation) Guided relaxation is an integral part of Ashram Yoga's perspective to yoga. We incorporate a meditation or relaxation component in every class we teach. We consider this part of an holistic approach to sharing yoga. Yoga Nidra can be learnt as a standalone training. It is not necessary that you have previous yoga teaching skills or expected that you are or go on to become a yoga teacher. Many other styles of teachers, trainers, therapists and corporate professionals find this training useful to offer in their work environments.
Our Level 1 and 2 courses are offered as either part-time or intensive courses. Level 3 is only offered as an intensive course.
All of our part-time courses are taught annually in Auckland at Yoga Ground studio, Grey Lynn. Level 1 takes place over 9 weekends in a seven-month period. Level 2 takes place one weekend a month over 5 months, with both the initial and completing weekends hosted at our Ohui Retreat in the Coromandel. These courses are popular for people wanting/needing to integrate their learning into life as they are living it.
Level 1 Intensive is conducted twice a year in February and May at our Ohui Retreat, Coromandel . These courses give students a live-in experience of an ashram-like lifestyle - living, breathing, eating and sleeping yoga over a 28 day period. It is an intense and transformative experience suited to international students who have a shorter stay in New Zealand or those who want a more condensed learning experience.
Level 2&3 Intensive comprises Levels 2 and 3 back to back at Ohui Retreat. You may participate in one or both courses sequentially. Level 3 as a standalone course is only run as an 11-day residential retreat.
Our participant numbers are limited depending on the training. We aim to develop interpersonal connection within our groups, rather than mass exposure. Our trainings are experiential, therefore there are no exams or tests on any of our courses. Competency is assessed on practice, assignments and teaching. As long as you are fully present for all course hours, diligently practice and submit homework assignments there is no way to fail any of the teacher training courses. Our goal is education in its truest sense – to draw out the learning rather than impart it!
Upon completion of any of our training modules you gain access to our Graduate Support Program, a unique gift from Ashram Yoga offering you opportunity to stay connected to your learning and continued development via our mentoring program. You will also be eligible for Yoga Alliance accreditation giving access to teaching abroad with affiliation to an internationally recognised yoga organisation.
Yoga Alliance(yogaalliance.org)is an international education and support organisation for yoga, based in the United States. They work in the public interest to ensure that there is a thorough understanding of the benefits of yoga, that the teachers of yoga value its history and traditions and that the public can be confident of the quality and consistency of instruction.
Yoga Alliance registration allows you the opportunity to receive an internationally recognised accreditation, acknowledged by insurance companies overseas. Ashram Yoga are pleased to be aligned with Yoga Alliance as a part of our teacher training programs. This accreditation guarantees the high quality and standard of our training courses as the Yoga Alliance requires a strict regulation of international standard on course material, presentation and continuing education from its Registered Yoga Teaching Institutes.
Yoga Alliance has two levels of certification for teachers: a 200-hour certificate (RYT-200) and a 500-hour certificate (RYT-500). Ashram Yoga is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) and is certified to teach a 200-hour course and a more advanced 300-hour course meeting the requirements for 500-hour certification (RYT-500).
500-Hour Certification This certification recognises a higher level of training and experience. It is available after completing Level 1 or a similar RYT-200 course plus Level 2 and Level 3.
None of our courses include registration fees for Yoga Alliance. Registration is optional. Many students complete our teacher training courses for their own education and do not register with Yoga Alliance. However, registration is common for those who are actively teaching. We refer all registration matters to Yoga Alliance since they are the registering body. Their fee structure may be found here.
