Travel to Ohui Retreat
I will be arriving in Auckland a few days before the Intensive starts. Where can I stay?
There are a variety of accommodation options in our neighbourhood (Parnell) ranging from backpackers through to hotels. See this page for a list of places. We used to have accommodation at our Parnell studio but that space has now been converted for other activities.
What are the transportation arrangements to Ohui?
We provide transport from our studio in Auckland to Ohui Retreat on the afternoon before the course starts – usually departing at 1pm. We also provide transport from Ohui Retreat back to our studio in Auckland on the morning after the course finishes. Transportation costs $25 each way.
There are 24-hour airport shuttles available that can take you to Ashram Yoga’s studio in Auckland. Uber is also a cost-effective service. We can arrange access to the studio if you arrive outside business hours – if you let us know in advance.
There are intercity buses that stop close to Ohui Retreat at a tiny place called Hikuai. We charge $25 to be collected or dropped off there. This needs to be arranged in advance.
Should you arrive late or need alternative transportation, we will do our best to help you organise this.
Accommodation and Facilities at Ohui Retreat
What are the sleeping arrangements?
Accommodation is communal with twin or quad rooms. There are a few single rooms that may be booked on a first come first served basis for an additional $400. Showers and toilets are private facilities shared with other guests.
How do I wash my clothes?
We have two washing machines and an outdoor clothesline and indoor drying racks. We provide washing powder.
Can I bring my car?
Yes, we have a large property and there is plenty of space for parking.
Is there internet access?
Yes, there is wireless broadband internet. However, our property is located at the end of the line so it is sometimes a bit slow.
Is there cell phone coverage?
There is no cell phone coverage around the main buildings. However, there is good coverage on the beach which is about 200m away or on the hill behind us which is also about 200m walk. We get by with a landline.
What does the daily schedule look like?
Predominantly the intensive days begin at 5.30am with a morning class and finish each evening by 9pm with kirtan (chanting), satsang (discourse and discussion) and meditation.
Days include workshops, teaching practice and Karma Yoga. Meal times are an hour long. There are also periods of time for completing written assignments.
Do we get time off during the Intensive?
One day off is scheduled towards the middle of the month. The exact date will be confirmed by the end of the first week of the Intensive.
During this time, you may make arrangements for people to visit you or to leave the property. Transportation is not provided on your day off. However, there are always course participants with vehicles who are willing to share rides to/from the local town.
There will be other periods of time off when the curriculum allows it. Please note that this is an intensive course and there is a lot of material to cover – so there isn’t a lot of time off.
Can my partner/friends/family visit me during the Intensive?
Yes. The best time would be during the day off mentioned above or other times by prior arrangement, when you can spend time with them during meal breaks.
Are there shops nearby?
The closest town is Whangamata which is about 15 minutes drive from the retreat. Please bring what you need as the workshop days do not provide time to travel to town.
Arrangements can be made with our staff to purchase items you may need when they are scheduled to go to town. Alternatively you can go to town on your day off.
What kind of food is served on the Intensive?
We serve wholesome vegetarian food including rice, lentils, cooked vegetables, salads and fruit. The food is delicious, easy to digest and nourishing. Most of our food is gluten and dairy free. We use organic, locally sourced and in-season food wherever possible.
We provide herbal teas, regular tea and coffee. We have clean and delicious water from our own underground supply. Please let us know if you have special dietary requirements. As a holistic retreat centre we are used to accommodating guests' dietary needs.
Can I bring food with me?
We encourage eating wholesome, unprocessed food in moderate quantities. This helps to keep the mind and body settled making your yoga practice more comfortable and achievable. We feed everyone well. If you are on a raw food diet (or similar) and need extra items you are welcome to store them in the fridge.
Some comfort foods like chocolate are fine, although we suggest in small quantities. The yoga house and kitchen are vegetarian so we ask that you don’t bring meat products.
When is full payment required?
A $500 deposit is required to secure your place on the course. The balance is due two weeks before the course begins. Please note that there is an early bird discount if full payment is made in advance by the stated date.
What is the refund policy?
Payments by Credit Card and Paypal
An additional 4% is charged for payments by Paypal or by credit card, except for the $500 deposit. We accept Visa and MasterCard. Our Paypal address is firstname.lastname@example.org.

Does the Intensive qualify me for Yoga Alliance?
Yes, the Level 1 Intensive provides all the hours and content required for Yoga Alliance’s 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification (RYT-200). The Level 2&3 Intensive is a 300-hour course that qualifies you for the RYT-500 certification.
Is registration with Yoga Alliance automatic?
No. Yoga Alliance is a separate organisation to Ashram Yoga. Some people do the Intensive for their own education and not to be a teacher, so we do not include registration in the course fee.
Do I need to be registered with Yoga Alliance to teach yoga?
You do not need to belong to any association to teach yoga in New Zealand. Registration with Yoga Alliance is optional. However, it is an internationally recognised qualification that adds credibility.
In some countries registration with Yoga Alliance can help you get insurance. Please check the laws in your own location regarding what qualifications, if any, are required to teach yoga.
How do I register with Yoga Alliance?
To register with Yoga Alliance go to their website (yogaalliance.org), create an account and then fill in their registration form online. It costs about US$110 to register for RYT-200 certification.
